Demo: Teresa Rogers -Stencils and Texture

March the 21st saw our first Monday evening club night of 2023. The evening was well supported and our move to the Anne Rose Hall created a great space for a friendly and chatty evening whilst Teresa showed us how she builds her paintings from random mark making to a finished picture.

The evening began with Teresa showing us examples of her work and how she used a multi-layered surface as a backdrop for her subject matter - be it foxes, hares or tea cups.

The first stage was to select a few colours and roller them in a haphazard way onto the surface, moving then to stencilling, again in an ad hoc manner, the aim being to create a multi-layered and textured surface. Once this was done, Teresa then drew around stencils of hares that she had preprepared. The shapes were then outlined with an acrylic pen and painted in with a transparent coat of colour allowing surface texture to show through.

The last two stages were to work into the background area using pens to bring out detail or to dull an area by overpainting. She made it look very easy though. I’m sure we will all discover it is not as simple to achieve an accomplished result when we attend her workshop.

The workshop is from 10 – 1pm on April 29th and will cost £20. Either acrylics or watercolour are suitable for this technique but if you would like to take part and have neither of these mediums RAS will have a limited stock of paint for you to use. (For a small donation to our funds). Email Jen and Sally to book a place.

The evening was great fun, very much about responding to the painting as it developed and without the pressure and restriction of doing something that was governed by a specific subject matter.
