Workshop: Karen Welsh - Abstracting the Landscape

Following up her very successful demo, Karen recapped her painting approach. A basic sketch, a limited palette, washes, textures and lots of layers, paying attention to balance, movement and atmosphere..

We began with a grid exercise, making a succession of quick random marks in a restricted colour palette, then working them into an abstract design. After that, the follow up was very much up to members - some chose to work from sketches or photo references, some chose to develop a painting from one of their grid designs. (Some people managed both!)

Karen circulated round providing advice and lots of encouragement - especially to those a long way out of their comfort zone.

An excellent workshop which gave members plenty of space to develop their skillsets.
