Clubnight: Critique with Linda Patterson - and a message from Love Ukraine

Linda Patterson congratulated us on the quality of the work and gave us some valuable advice about our paintings and presentation:

  • Dont be timid with colour. Pull colours from one section to another to give your composition some unity.

  • Try complimentary colours in shadows.

  • Use photographs as a starting point, don’t confine yourself to copying.

  • Don’t get caught up in depicting fine detail when just an impression would serve the composition better.

  • Stand back from your work often and consider the composition as a whole.

  • Are tree trunks just brown? Look again.

  • Mounting and framing really matter when it comes to making the most of your artwork

  • A clever idea for mounting fragile pastel works: use two thicknesses of mount card (the bottom one having a slightly larger aperture) to push the glass further from the pastel. That way any dust falls behind the top mount and remains unseen.

Clubnight began with a few words from Owen Griffiths, chair of Love Ukraine. He came to thank the members of RAS for their great generosity in donating so many lovely artworks for the auction. He went on to explain some of the work being done to support the people arriving in Ringwood from Ukraine.

He said that their role was to help create mutually supportive networks for the new arrivals and the host families. They were working alongside the council and other agencies to help with learning English and finding employment. They also looked to provide the little extra items to make life more enjoyable for families.
