THE GREYFRIARS TROPHY FOR BEST WATERCOLOUR - WINNER - "The Watcher" by Michael Clare. A beautiful painting with painstaking detail. The composition with the wood framing the cat works well. If I was to make a comment I feel the wood being less symmetrical would have been beneficial.
THE GREYFRIARS TROPHY FOR BEST WATERCOLOUR - RUNNER-UP - "St. Mark's Square" by Alan Gibson. The dark arches draw the viewer into the Basilica with the figures adding to the drama of a busy place. Excellent scale of foreground and distant figures.
THE JAN MURRAY TROPHY FOR BEST OIL PAINTING - WINNER - "Kimmeridge 1" by Virginia Whiting. Well structured painting with bold areas of paint and good contrasts. The horizontal layering leads the viewer through the composition.
THE JAN MURRAY TROPHY FOR BEST OIL PAINTING - RUNNER-UP - "Kimmeridge Ilse of Purbeck by Jeanette Dawson. Lovely balance of shapes and colour evocative of the area - all three works are excellently painted capturing the essence of the Jurassic Coast.
THE COURTICE MILLENNIUM PLATE FOR THE BEST PASTEL & THE FOSTER WELLS TROPHY FOR THE BEST PAINTING IN THE EXHIBITION CHOSEN FROM THE PRIZE WINNERS - WINNER - "Mountiain Majesty" by Ann Squire. The composition is excellent - giving the animal a place to breathe. the indistinct background with its subtle colour allows the viewer to focus completely on the animal's expression. Good 3 dimensional quality with lighting.
THE COURTICE MILLENNIUM PLATE FOR THE BEST PASTEL - RUNNER-UP - "After the Catch", by Pauline Palmer. A difficult subject well rendered. the detail on the foreground hasn't been overworked, allowing the viewer to use their imagination.
THE MASON-SMITH TROPHY FOR BEST ACRYLIC - WINNER - "Canel du Midi" by Ann Toase. Impressionist brush work and pink underpainting gives a tranquillity to the scene - very well painted on a large scale.
THE MASON-SMITH TROPHY FOR BEST ACRYLIC - RUNNER-UP - "Agapanthus" by Vilma Harvey. Excellent botanical illustration very difficult to do with acrylic. The whole flower filling the space gives a sense of majesty to the composition.
THE JUBILEE TROPHY FOR THE BEST PAINTING IN ANY OTHER MEDIUM - WINNER - "Ornamental Drive" by Lindsey Cole. Good use of texture but not overdone. The wedgewood blue allows the viewer to focus on the areas through the trees.
THE JUBILEE TROPHY FOR THE BEST PAINTING IN ANY OTHER MEDIUM - RUNNER -UP - "Cattle by the Thicket" by Cathy Beggs. Excellent composition and use of colour with black and white allowing the viewer to focus on the cattle. The abstracted qualities of pen complement the focal area.
THE MOLLIE STEVENS TROPHY FOR BEST MINIATURE - WINNER - "The Cat and the Bee" by Ann Nolloth. Beautifully painted - the spaces around the cat really allows the viewer to focus on the tension between the cat and the bee.
THE MOLLIE STEVENS TROPHY FOR BEST MINIATURE - RUNNER-UP - "Tied up for the night" by Lorraine Halsey. Well thought through concept with the topic and frame. the dark frame helps to focus on the beautifully rendered painting.
THE HARRY JOHNS TROPHY FOR MOST ORIGINAL WORK - WINNER - "Pool Spirit" by Judith Warbey. Very interesting composition, with the layers of subtle differences in colour capturing the imagination of the viewer, having a "Mark Rothko" effect.
THE SAM HOLLAND TROPHY FOR THE MOST IMAGINATIVE PAINTING - WINNER - "View for the Areoplane" by Teresa Rogers. This work captures the abstracted qualities of the land from above with its colours and shapes.
THE HARRY JOHNS TROPHY FOR MOST ORIGINAL WORK - RUNNER-UP - "Midnight with a Bang" by Suzan Houching. Expressive painting that has movement and excitement anchored down by the silhouetted buildings.
THE SAM HOLLAND TROPHY FOR THE MOST IMAGINATIVE PAINTING - RUNNER-UP - "Riverbank" by Beryl Richards. This painting captures the imagination of 'pond dipping' as a child. All these painting in this style work well. Perhaps a little more light on some of the 'swirls' would create more depth - this can be done with a white pencil. The framing is a little dark - good presentation should be considered.
