Di Alexander OLD ENGLAND FINE ART
I am inspired by ‘Old Master’ artists Caravaggio and Vermeer and I also like the lighting effects of digital fantasy art. My most useful artistic discovery is a way of selecting the hues for a painting i.e. the gamut mask technique outlined in James Gurney’s ‘Colour and Light’ book.

My paintings aim to show domestic life in England before photography because we have relatively few pictures of this ‘lost world’ centuries ago. I take photographs of people in costume at re-enactment events and from these I compose my paintings. Three venues provide excellent authentic backgrounds:
• The Little Woodham 17thc. Living History Village in Gosport in Hampshire is open to the public on selected days from spring until autumn.
• The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton in West Sussex occasionally has re-enactment events in their historic domestic buildings.
Kentwell Hall at Long Melford in Suffolk stage regular Tudor weekends throughout the summer
